Wilco's 5th studio album was released on 22 June 2004.

After the departure of Jay Bennett (who had co-written and co-produced the band's previous 2 records) after the Yankee Hotel Foxtrot sessions, Jeff Tweedy assumed more control of the group. Bassist/guitarist John Stirratt was the only other original band member to remain.

The release of A Ghost is Born was delayed due to Tweedy's entrance into a rehab clinic in March 2004 to deal with an addiction to painkillers he had developed due to anxiety, chronic migraines, and depression. Despite the delay, the album debuted at #8 in the US and sold more than 80,000 copies the first week (both high marks for the band to that time). It would go on to sell almost 350,000 copies and earn the band its first Grammy Awards - Best Alternative Music Album, and Best Recording Package (which went to Dan Nadel and Peter Buchanan-Smith).
