This week, we're diving into Spooky Lakes: 25 Strange and Mysterious Lakes That Dot Our Planet, written and illustrated by Milwaukee-based artist, author, and educator Geo Rutherford. Published in 2024 by Abrams Books for Young Readers in New York, this eerie yet enchanting collection is based on Rutherford’s viral Spooky Lake Month TikTok series.

Rutherford’s book explores some of the world’s strangest and most haunting lakes. From Tanzania’s Lake Natron, whose waters can mummify animals, to Venezuela’s Lake Maracaibo, where an endless lightning storm rages, to the ghostly shipwrecks preserved in the cold depths of Lake Superior. These real-life phenomena prove that truth can be just as chilling as legend.

Her moody, mesmerizing illustrations capture the quiet mystery of deep waters while teaching readers about hydrology, ecosystems, and the importance of protecting our planet’s fragile environments. Blending field guide precision with folklore flair, Spooky Lakes delivers equal parts wonder and goosebumps, perfect reading for spooky season and a reminder that even the calmest lake may hold secrets beneath its ripples.

Geo Rutherford was once a graduate student of our Special Collections librarian, Max Yela, and our copy of Spooky Lakes is a gift from him featuring a signed presentation inscription from the author herself.

Another new book from Abrams. We’ve gotten to the point in publishing where, if you’re like me and like large-format art books, you need to get used to the idea of buying them when they are released. Fewer and fewer publishers are taking the risk of releasing art books, and they are staying in print for shorter and shorter periods of time. So, when I heard about this book, I made a point of getting myself a copy, and I’m glad I did. While my preference in vintage book cover art leans more toward the pulp era, it is the 70s covers that I find myself the most familiar and nostalgic. Featuring some all-time greats—Frazetta, Vallejo, Elson, Emshwiller, Mead, the Dillons, et al—and divided into subject categories such as spaceships, cities and landscapes, plants, animals, aliens, fantasy realms, and cryptozoology, this is a beautiful and very welcome look at an incredibly creative, experimental, and occasionally ridiculous sci-fi decade.

Does anyone have any idea when we might get word on whether a third Danny Phantom book is approved or not?

We're about half a year past the release of Fair Game now, and Gabriela has been mostly inactive on her social media lately. I worry this means we're not getting any more, but I'd like to at least know. I hate when studios and publishers take projects they no longer care about and put them on the shelf to collect dust rather than make a final executive decision. I don't know how things work over at Abrams Books, but I really hope something is announced soon because these are good books that deserve to be completed, and there's still plenty more story to tell!
