Also I think it's implied that his dad never really talked through his mother's much at all with Stefan, he just sent him to a therapist to talk it out with her. I mean maybe he feels ill-equipped to handle his son's emotions while dealing with his own, but isn't he also like a psychologist or something? There was a certificate/degree on his wall for something like that. They could have even talk to the therapist a couple times *together* instead of Peter listening in at the door which is also a bit mad.
