LOTUS EATERS

青春にはその時代にしかない共存の仕方がある。 「青い」「美しい」「爽やか」「痛い」「清い」「透き通る」「傷」。 こういったキーワードの中でも相容れないふたつが共存するのが、青春であり思春期なのだ。 たとえば「美しい痛み」、「透き通る傷」。 痛みは傷を伴い、傷は恐怖を伴うものであるのに、この時代にはそれらが、まるで透き通った輝く美しさを持っている。 その時代だけが持つこの特徴は、時に「硝子」にたとえられる。

ロータス・イータースはそれらのキーワードの中で、「美しい」「爽やか」「透き通る」といった相容れるものだを表に見せたグループだった。 出始めの頃のティアーズ・フォー・フィアーズが、アコースティック・ギターを所々に入れて、ハイトーンのヴォーカルを聞かせた「ペイル・シェルター」で「青さ」と「痛み」を共存させたのに対して、ロータス・イータースが「ファースト・ピクチャー・オブ・ユー（邦題：青春のアルバム　←　なんとかしてください）」で聞かせたのは、「透き通った爽やかさ」、淡い初恋のよき思い出だった。

ただ、彼らはだてに刈上げていたわけではない。 ピーターとジェレミーの刈上げは本気だった。 アルバム「ノー・センス・オブ・シン（邦題：青春のアルバム　←　これもなんとかしてください）」で聞かせた楽曲は、「ファースト・ピクチャー・オブ・ユー」の透明感に「痛み」を映したものだった。 彼らが本当に得意としたメロディはシングルカットされたデビュー曲のそれではなかったのだろう。

セカンドアルバムに先行される形で（注）シングルカットされ、クリップの流された「ユー・ドント・ニード・サムワン・ニュー」では、その「痛み」が全編に漂っていた。 そして、後ろからのアングルで堂々と移される、アクターの刈上げはその毛穴から、血が流れるのではないかと思うくらいに白黒なのに青かった。 その痛みに耐えかねた時、彼らの青春は終わった。
