the concept of northumberland being kinder and more caring to his political ally/friend (?) than his own flesh and blood son
it's not as simple as northumberland only acting like this to manipulate bolingbroke to the throne/for his own political advantage because i think their alliance needs to have been genuine for the rebellion in 1h4 to really have its bite. the deterioration of it involves bolingbroke becoming unrecognizable from the person northumberland once knew. and northumberland's outrage at richard's treatment of gaunt is extremely real which i think informs most of his interactions with bolingbroke. on the other hand, he IS capable of human emotion so does he just uniquely hate hotspur or what

not enough productions properly show the fact that grief for his father motivates bolingbroke for most of the play. i would love to see a production where he's wearing mourning black from gaunt's death and onwards, until the deposition.
and maybe in 5.6, when he says "come mourn with me for what i do lament and put on sullen black incontinent", he's slowly taking out the black clothes and putting them on again

Mourning blacks have their own dramatic effect, especially since most productions put Richard in white, but if you want a Bolingbroke who really looks on edge, make him Jewish.
Jewish Mourning traditions have the immediate family tearing the shirt they wore to the funeral, and wearing it (without washing) for the length of the Shiva (seven days). Orphaned sons and specifically don't shave for 30 days (even three months in some cases).
Bolingbroke presumably came to England as soon as he heard his father died, but we don't know how much time passed. *Henry* doesn't know when his father's funeral was, or if he even had one.
So like imagine Bolingbroke coming on stage in 2.3 in a torn unwashed shirt- worse, imagine him meeting York, the only other person alive who those traditions would apply to, and he's not in mourning. Did Bolingbroke miss the Shiva? Or did York not hold one?
York *would* be the one hosting it, so what does he mean by "Unless you please to enter in the castle And there repose you for this night." in that context?
Also we can have a scene of Northumberland shaving Bolingbroke before his coronation (we know "'Tis full three months"). Which fits very well in the dynamic they have my head.

😭😭😭😭😭😭😭 okay so. how do i explain this. i’ve been writing fics for years but am really bad at ever actually finishing and posting anything. i’ve been swearing to finally post a fic for like the entire time i’ve been on tumblr. i’ve also been very hesitant to share my works online because ao3's status in fandom and the way that it works really intimidates me. i do have some WIPs in the rotation atm that i’m tentatively hoping to post soon…? AND☝️i did sign up for the histories ficathon this year! so that’s actually a guarantee i'll post something by september! but anytime before that, i am so bad at finishing things and even worse about sharing to strangers online so the honest answer is:
i've never seen a production of richard ii where bolingbroke just kisses richard normally in 1.3

northumberland keeps buying bolingbroke food and carrying his bags for him (thanks 2015 globe production for this) and letting him sleep on the only bed when they're rooming together all the while going "mannn i can tell you're really upset because your dad died, because i'm an empath. remember how richard let that happen? remember how this is richard's fault?" and bolingbroke is like wow :) i love my friend :) he is so nice to me
