What I want from Disney’s “Peter Pan” reboot:
(1) The final title ends up being either “Peter Pan and Wendy” or “Peter and Wendy” ala the original publications.
(2) Wendy is written and billed with equal protagonist status as Pan.
(3) Pan and Hook and Neverland itself being shaped by Wendy and her brothers’ imaginations is actually a thing that happens outside the realm of subtext.
(4) The fact that Pan thins out his own Lost Boys is in no way shied away from.
(5) No string-pulling Disney execs make the writers pretend Pan and Hook aren’t two sides of the same morally dubious coin.
(6) Hook as the embodiment of Wendy’s hypothetical future Husband (who also just happens to look exactly like Dear Old Dad--nope nothing remotely Electran about that) is explored so bluntly it puts the 2003 movie to shame.
(7) Tiger Lily is portrayed by an actual Native American actress.
(8) Tiger Lily is assigned a historically accurate tribe.
(9) Tiger Lily and her tribe all have a critical role to play in the plot besides fulfilling the Magical Natives stereotype of Peter Pans’ past.
(10) Tiger Lily and Wendy have an actual conversation and it has nothing to do with Pan or any petty rivalry over him.
(11) Tinker Bell doesn’t look like the CGI-equivalent of a malfunctioning Christmas bulb light.
(12) The Mermaids actually get to do SOMETHING besides trying to drown Wendy.
(13) While we’re at it, the Mermaids and Fairies actually get their own unique societies and cultures and ways of life outside of Peter.
(14) WENDY’S PET WOLF IS INCLUDED FOR ONCE AND I DIE A HAPPY WOMAN BECAUSE. IT. IS. A THINGGGGGGGG.
(15) The writers keep that one scene from the novel where Wendy and Hook are on the Jolly Roger and she side-eyes him SO HARD the fucker nearly faints.
(16) The movie ends up being just as bold and provocative and unafraid of diverging from its original animation as Maleficent was.
What I probably won’t get from Disney’s “Peter Pan” reboot: ANY of the above.
