i saw live 25 may 2010 tonight, at the Serralves Auditorium, there will be two excellent shows, with the presence and positive performance of two unavoidable bands in the North American alternative rock scene.

Shellac, the band of the legendary Steve Albini, was accompanied by Mission of Burma at the band's presentation in the city of Porto, filling the Serralves Auditorium.

One day after the long-awaited debut of the American trio in Portuguese territory, at the Zé dos Bois Gallery in Lisbon, 25 May 2010 was the day for the people of Porto to take advantage of the rare opportunity to see Shellac live, in a co-production between Amplificasom, Mouco and the Serralves Foundation.

Mission of BurmaThe Mission of Burma, a veteran band from Boston, which has been in existence for three decades, were the first to present themselves to the public, with a view to the task of warming up a seated Serralves Auditorium.

It was just after 10 p.m. when Roger Miller (guitar and vocals), Clint Conley (bass and vocals), Peter Prescott (drums and vocals) and Bob Weston (sound engineer) took the stage in front of a packed room.

One of the defining characteristics of Mission of Burma's sound is the experimentation with tape loops, a very important contribution introduced by former member Martin Swope in the early 80s.

What he did was to record what is being played live, manipulate it, and send the result back, as if it were a new instrument. The use of this process implies a factor of unpredictability that does not always go well, but which the band members find funny, precisely because of this unpredictable nature.

After the breakup in 1983, Mission of Burma's reputation developed greatly, and their work was considered by many critics to be essential at a turning point in independent American music.

The band is pointed out as a reference and inspiration for bands such as Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Sonic Youth, Yo La Tengo, Fugazi, R.E.M. or Pixies. Bob Weston, also a member of Shellac, replaced Swope as sound engineer when the band reunited in 2002 after a two-decade hiatus.

After Mission of Burma, it was Shellac's turn to take the stage to show their minimalist rock, whose recipe takes ingredients such as heavy and repetitive rhythms, the angular sound of the guitar and the sarcastic lyrics of Steve Albini, charismatic leader of the band and a key name in the North American alternative rock scene.

Former Big Black and Rapeman, he has a 25-year career. As a sound engineer and producer, he has worked with numerous big names, such as Nirvana, Pixies, PJ Harvey, Mogwai, The Stooges, Robert Plant or Manic Street Preachers. What is now called indie owes a lot to this gentleman.

The trio formed in 1992 in the city of Chicago, composed of Steve Albini (guitar and vocals), Bob Weston (bass and vocals) and Todd Trainer (drums) surrendered the audience with an excellent session of raw, mathematical and minimalist rock.

Albini and company toured, to the delight of the public, the repertoire they had gathered in almost two decades, in a lineup that featured themes such as "Copper", "Squirrel Song", "Steady as She Goes" or "Prayer to God".

There was also time for a brief question and answer session between the band and the audience, before the former said goodbye to the audience with "Spoke", a theme taken from the most recent album of originals "Excellent Italian Greyhound", with most of those present already standing, after a request by the band for the audience to stand up while watching the show. After all, it's not every day that you see a Selac concert. If we are given this rare opportunity, at least let us take it standing up! by Ricardo Almeida

Serralves is a cultural institution located in Porto, Portugal. It includes a contemporary art museum, a park, and a villa, with each one of these being an example of contemporary architecture, Modernism, and Art Deco architecture. The museum, designed by Álvaro Siza Vieira, is now the second most visited museum in Portugal (almost 1 million visitors per year).

Peter Glen Prescott is a musician from Boston, Massachusetts. He is best known as the drummer for Mission of Burma.

After Burma disbanded in 1983, Prescott remained active in the Boston music scene, forming Volcano Suns and later Kustomized, Peer Group, and Minibeast.

Mission of Burma reformed in 2002, with Bob Weston replacing Swope.[The band released four more albums—ONoffON, The Obliterati, The Sound the Speed the Light, and Unsound—before splitting up in June 2020.

Mission of Burma was an American post-punk band from Boston, Massachusetts.

The group formed in 1979 with Roger Miller on guitar, Clint Conley on bass, Peter Prescott on drums, and Martin Swope contributing audiotape manipulation and acting as the band’s sound engineer.

In this initial lineup, Miller, Conley, and Prescott all shared singing and songwriting duties
