Grace Kelly and Maria Riva
This lovely photo was originally posted on Facebook in October 2016 by Miss Riva’s son, Peter Riva. He captioned the photo, “My mother with Grace Kelly, circa 1955,” and claims his mother “passed the role in High Society (Philadelphia Story) to Grace, telling the producers, "You really should want her over me…”
While she may be better recalled as the only child of Marlene Dietrich (of whom she published a memoir in 1992,) Maria Riva was an actress during television’s “Golden Age.” She appeared, much as Grace had, in serials like Danger, Suspense and Kraft Theatre. She left acting by the end of the 1950s to concentrate on family, but returned for a very brief appearance in Bill Murray’s 1988 vehicle Scrooged opposite on-screen spouse Robert Mitchum. She is now 92.
Above is my edit of the original photo.
Below is Mr. Riva’s original found on his Facebook page.
(P.S. Is that Ceil Chapman that Grace is wearing?)

"Marlene was always a romantic. People never understood her. She could fall in love with a song, you know, a beautiful day, a perfect piece of pastry cooked by somebody in France; she could fall in love in a heartbeat and be absolutely genuine with it. Very child-like quality to be absolutely in love with something with blazing fury. It’s a wonderful quality and when it comes out in movies like taking off the shoes in Morocco, it’s really her. That’s the way she was.”
- Peter Riva, grandson of Marlene Dietrich
