“I haven’t listened to this for a long time, but once needle was in groove it immediately transported me back to my teenage bedroom and the chilling suspense and excitement of hearing the scratchy malevolent opening to Intruder. It’s really quite striking, with his old band-mate Phil Collins helping out with a suitably striking drum sound. Having since lived through the experience Gabriel sings about, from the point of view of the victim rather than perpetrator I hasten to add, it brought additional chills down my spine. This album is a landmark in terms of its sound, produced by Steve Lillywhite and engineered by Hugh Padgham, and was the first to develop what became known as ‘gated drums’ when Gabriel banned the use of cymbals. Bowie released Scary Monsters (and Super Creeps) in 1980, an equally career-defining albums for him as this was for Gabriel. But, and I do not say this lightly, this is the better album...” .
