"Their life was battle — the sword was their law". Times couldn't be worse for a slogan like that. Although a few political leaders still didn't get the message that our times are calling for solidarity instead. Anyhow, I watched Tarantini's The Sword of the Barbarians from 1982 again yesterday. It's probably not the best time for escapism either, but I'd also go completely insane without it... I really like this flick. Sangraal, as the movie was also called in Germany, was directed by Michele Massimo Tarantini who's commonly known for his sexy-comedy flicks. Sword of the Barbarians is one of his rather serious creations. Sangraal, the hero, was played by Italian Sword & Sorcery superstar Peter McCoy aka Pietro Torrisi. Unfortunately this fantastic VHS and movie poster artwork by E. Sciotti is quite misleading. There aren't any mammoths in the movie. The hero looks completely different too, and Sabrina Siani only shows up in like 20 seconds as a completely different character. Also the title is misleading. The magic weapon the hero is searching for is not a sword, nor an ax as shown on the poster. It's actually a crossbow! Sangraal eventually finds it in a shrine, protected by the Golden Goddess (Siani). With the help of this weapon he can overcome the realm of torture and fear of the Fire Goddess Rani, and restore peace and justice for the people. In other words, Sangraal is completely different to Conan the Barbarian, and far from being a rip-off. It's not the simple will to revenge (or power) of the individual that fuels Sangraal's actions. It's his restored believe in equality, and justice. That being said, don't loose hope, Italy, in troublesome times like these! A better world is waiting for all of us, if we only learn to live and fight as one! /// Die Krauts, die es geschafft haben bis hierher zu lesen, können gleich auch den neuen Artikel auf http://barbarenschinken.tumblr.com zum Thema auschecken.
