You check what side any tang inscription is on, remembering that it should face out from its wearer’s left side. If that means the edge curves down, it’s a tachi. If up: katana. If there are no inscriptions, Proper Experts can ID one from the other by differences in blade curvature, tang angle, point taper etc. I read up on it and decided life (mine anyway) was too short… :->
