You check what side any tang inscription is on, remembering that it should face out from its wearer’s left side. If that means the edge curves down, it’s a tachi. If up: katana. If there are no inscriptions, Proper Experts can ID one from the other by differences in blade curvature, tang angle, point taper etc. I read up on it and decided life (mine anyway) was too short… :->

The trick here is that this is a cat. It’s sharp at all ends. I don’t particularly fancy trying to bathe it in anything.

Yarrow will tolerate a lot, and is fascinated by water, and I could probably rub some stuff into his fur, but I don’t know that his easygoing nature extends to being “rinsed.”

The CCD I mean is the image-capturing surface (the "film") inside my camera (Wikipedia's entry on Charge-Coupled Device has a pic of a Sony one that's probably newer and certainly cleaner than mine... :-)

Oho! It is the same thing - I should learn when to shut my big mouth. :-)

Wikipedia: “CCDs move charge between capacitive bins in the device, with the shift allowing for the transfer of charge between bins... In a CCD image sensor, pixels are represented by p-doped MOS capacitors. These capacitors are biased above the threshold for inversion when image acquisition begins, allowing the conversion of incoming photons into electron charges at the semiconductor-oxide interface; the CCD is then used to read out these charges.”

(As always, if there’s something I can explain about the above, do ask; I love explaining things, and this is stuff I should be better acquainted with in any case.)

Specinst (wants to sell you stuff): “Thermal energy alone is enough to excite extraneous electrons into the image pixels and these cannot be distinguished from the actual image photoelectrons. This process generates noise and is called ‘dark current.’ For every 6-7°C of cooling, there is about a 2X reduction in the total dark current generation rate. This of course has its limits, most CCDs don’t function well below –120°C. Below is an example of how the CCD temperature affects dark current. Note that cooling to around –100°C nearly removes the noise generated from dark current.”

So the difference is that I’m accustomed to CCDs being used in vacuum, when decreasing energy increases the level of your vacuum, so of course the CCD needs cooled. (Generally by physically dumping the Ni into the CCD bucket, because they don’t let n00bs like me play with the nice tools. But dumping the Ni in is more fun anyway.) But if you just want it in your camera - well, why not have a little chip there? It’s not like we can’t.

The Welsh-speaking landlord in the Bull's Head (27 years ago so maybe gone now) told us that pronouncing "LL" as "F" was easiest, "H" was better and the right way was a breathy back-of-the-throat noise that I, being Northern Irish, could manage and Diane, being North American, could not. He also said "But they do it different down south..." which told me all I needed to know about that. Not simply pronouncing it as "EL" at least gets a-tick-and-gold-star-for-effort. :-D
