The perfect kitty is out there waiting for you, check out petfinder.com or head to your local shelter
It would seem
that I really enjoy torturing myself by getting on to Petfinder.com and falling in love with all the dogs I can't adopt right now. -__-
I LOVE CONURES. I rescue conures (and other birds). I have 2 kids that are conures. I have Clifford (RIP) the conure tattooed on my back. So, let me say something to joo...
Conures (and all animals) deserve love, attention, and patience. They are not getting any of that locked away in those tiny bins of a cage. It's like they're living in those tiny japanese hotel rooms. I asked an employee, "Do they get any out-of-the-cage time?" He respectfully replied, "Honestly, not enough." (Don't you dare fire this guy, he actually seems to care!) So, Drake and Tarzan have been stuck in there for how long? I've even seen birds in that scenario for longer.
There was a Quaker there who's hatchday was 3 years prior. 3 YEARS. I was told he's been bounced around from store to store. I wanted to buy him to save him, but that increases demand, and they'll just replace him with another sad bird. I would leave crying after trying to entertain him with my hand crawling around the glass for 20 minutes. I felt so bad for him and dwelled on the others who suffer like him; of the bird-mill parents he came from. I avoid #Petco, #PetSupermarket, and #Petsmart for these reasons and encourage others to do so until things change.
When getting a bird from Petco (I did way back when I wasn't as informed as I am now), there was no education, no honest description of what it means to be a bird parent. I had to give my dusky conure to my dad because she went from needy baby to adult. She now bites me and wants to cuddle him death. Oh, and when she's not cuddling, she's screaming for cuddles.
Petco, you adopt out dogs and cats, why not adopt out birds? Are you not aware of the Captive Parrot Crisis?
What Pet Stores can do right now: Hire a crew to interact with the bird on a frequent basis. Have avian education classes. Work with rescues and sanctuaries similar to how you are with dogs and cats.
Inevitably, STOP SELLING BRED-FOR-PROFIT BIRDS. BTW, conures live to be in their 30s, that's a BIG commitment alone.
Bird lovers, go ahead and call the number posted, 1-888-824-7257 Reblog for awareness (and I will love you forever)!

Me: I fall in love with dogs on Petfinder like 80 times a day. It's a hard life. My sister: Hey. Hey! This is a slippery slope. Illinois just legalized gay marriage. If you fall in love with a dog all those people who said, "What's next, people marrying their dogs?!" will be vindicated. Me: I'm going to gay marry so many dogs. My sister: You're setting LGBT rights back like 5 decades!
Pro tip: never go on petfinder.com to "casually" browse the adoptable puppies. There is no such thing as "casually" browsing adoptable puppies. Even if you manage to refrain from adopting a dog because you know you can't have one, your heart will still melt with sadness and you will drown in a puddle of your own soul's tears because you just want to cuddle all of them in a big, fluffy, adorable pile, goddammit. *sobs*
Finding the Purr-fect Pet - Adopt a Dog or Cat
It's been estimated that anywhere from 5 to 7 million dogs and cats enter animal shelters in the United States each year. As many as 3 to 4 million of them are euthanized, due to a lack of space to house them and/or a lack of finances to care for them. So the best thing to do if you want to add a pet to your family is to adopt one from a shelter. The next best thing is to adopt a dog or cat from a rescue group. For a list of shelters in your area search online at your city or town's website, or sites of animal welfare organizations such as the ASPCA. Check Petfinder.com for lists of rescue groups. Petfinder also lists photos and descriptions of dogs and cats, so that you can try to make a better match for the pet and your family situation. When adopting a dog it's important to consider your own lifestyle. If you're not particularly active, don't adopt an active breed, such as a Labrador Retriever. Labs often end up in shelters because their owners were not aware of how much walking and exercising was needed to keep this breed of dog. Other dogs may need more training to become well-behaved, and this could mean paying for a professional trainer or training classes. Do some research on the temperament of various breeds, to see what you can realistically handle. Also remember to microchip your dog. It's not a huge expense, and is the best bet to get your pet home to you if it ever becomes lost. Having a dog or cat to come home to every day can bring incredible joy to your life, and adopting a pet can bring happiness to an animal. Just like people, many just want to find their forever home.
He will be mine!
