After the fire, I'd hidden inside one of the school vans. I'd curled up on a bench seat and watched the arrival of the police, the firemen, and the paramedics. Each man had a hat: a fire hat, a police hat, a watchman's cap--even the paramedics had matching baseball caps. I remember thinking that we were beyond hats, that they were some twentieth-century relic, but when something needed to get done, everyone had a hat.
