Darkman (1990)
Darkman's another one of those stories like Princess Bride that stand out to me for being revenge narratives where the protagonist wholeheartedly chooses revenge at the end and the story neither punishes nor even really condemns him for it. Darkman's not a hero per se, it still is ultimately a tragic story about a kind man becoming a merciless killer and that isn't presented like a good thing. At the same time though the blame is squarely placed where it belongs, on the shitty evil people who did this to him. His revenge is justified and his conclusion at the end of the movie is just "I might be a monster but y'know what, I can live it. For better or worse, I am what I am and I don't regret my choices."
I watched Phantom of the Paradise yesterday and it is not. good.
Regardless, I want to stick Winslow in a terrarium and observe him like an insect.
Happy New Years everyone.
