HI! The phanfiction catalogue admins here! This a little review of how things really work in the blog. Here is an old post by Emily on how she finds her fics, but we’re gonna add some onto that!
How do you find phanfics? Well, I have lots of ways to find fics, but my favorite one is the search bar in the pfc blog (you know, the one that is a zoom glass), or the tag research bar, or read most of the masterlist. Google is really useful when you know some key word, or specific thing about the phanfic, or maybe when is on wattpad.
Do you read all the phanfics? I wish I could. Is someone sends and ask with a description that can be more than one answer then I have two methods: read the phanfic really fast or if the ask say something like “this person was in it” or “this person say this thing” or “this specific action happened” I will locate those key words and use the FIND ON THIS PAGE option. But above all of that, I read a lot of phanfics.
Do you check for badly written fics? I have a little problem with the term “badly written.” For me there is not bad writers, everyone has an amazing potential to write and some people just need to practice their writing so it can be better! So, for me no dan written things but I´m really interested in how to tell that one fanfic is one genre or another, even when they have mixed elements.
Have you made masterlists? How long that can take? My first masterlist was the Latin writers masterlist and that took me a few hours, but I already had all the fics ready, so that time it was just ordering them and that things. For new masterlist that pop into my mind I have to look for fics, if there is enough or not and save drafts with the process so that can take a little longer than a few hours.
Do you read the fics you recommend? Yes I do. For my first Mey´s Monthly Memorables, I put my five favorite phanfics of all times because they deserve all the love in this universe.
Any notes to add? I have this investigation in progress about phanfics and I can´t be more grateful for all the help that all the other admins are giving me, they took me like I was a long term friend even when they never knew about me before the applications. I met such an amazing people here, not just in the catalogue but the library too and they are all the most lovely, supportive and beautiful people I have ever met! Para todo el phandom latino que sepan que aquí tienen alguien dispuesta a promover sus trabajos maravilosos y espero que para sus futuros trabajos en español me envien los links para más masterlist que vienen en camino. Finally a shout out to my colombian girls that I love them to death!
How do you find phanfics? I usually look through the catalogue first, as most of us do I believe. I pick out a certain keyword and then type it into the search bar. If I know the title then I type that in first. If that doesn’t pop up, I’ll look through relevant masterlists or tags. I do the same thing with @phanfic . I then search google by just copy and pasting the most important sentence or something that is easily recognizable, followed by “phan” or “phanfic”. Quotes are a wonderful thing. I then move to ao3 if nothing has popped up and I use the search work button. I type in the phandom in the fandom section, and then in the tags I search for the most relevant topics. A lot of the time a fic will pop up. If it doesn’t, I search in the tumblr search bar for keywords followed by “phan” or “phanfic”. Wattpad is my last attempt because the search bar is really screwy on there haha!
Do you read all the phanfics? Not at all! I don’t really read many fics anymore because I’ve been so busy, tbh. If I’m unsure of if it’s the fic then I’ll skim through it or use ctrl+f and type in a keyword to see if it’s in the fic. That way I know it’s the right fic and I don’t have to read through it all.
Do you check for badly written fics? I don’t really know what badly written fics are. Just because I don’t personally like the way a fic is written doesn’t mean that someone else won’t like it. i’ll find and link a fic no matter what the writing style is.
Have you made masterlists? How long that can take? My first masterlist was the Wings masterlist! I’ve made several masterlists since but I have to be in a specific mood to actually make an entire masterlist, honestly. Otherwise I’ll just leave it in the drafts and add a couple of fics here and there. If i’m really excited for a masterlist it takes me anywhere between 20 minutes to an hour. Otherwise it can take me a couple of days if nobody else is working on it and i’m not working on it either. Just kinda depends on my mood.
Do you read the fics you recommend? Yes! I won’t recommend a fic that I haven’t read. All of the fics that i rec in the faves tag and the monthly memorables are fics that i’ve read and loved.
Any notes to add? I am extremely grateful for every single person on this blog and who uses this blog. Through being an admin, I’ve connected with many people who I have come to love and who accept me for the major nerd that I am. It’s really important to me that the catalogue is a safe environment for people to come to and not feel judged or like we’re attacking them. If you have any suggestions on how we can make our blog better, we are always curious for ideas and solutions to things and are always looking for ways to make it more accessible for people to come to. Currently we are focusing on undiscovered authors as well as making it a place where authors can write in their first languages that are not english. This is such an important thing to me and the amount of people who support us make my heart sing. Thank you all for everything, ilysm.
How do you find phanfics? Google is my friend when it comes to finding phanfics, if I can’t think of them off the top of my head. I use keywords and hope that something comes up when I search. Then, I’ll use the phanfictioncatalogue or phanfic’s search bar. ao3 is also very good for when it comes to finding fics. I can always almost find something on ao3.
Do you read all the phanfics? Surprisingly, no. Although I wish I could. I guess I’m very picky when it comes to reading phanfics because I haven’t even read a lot of the popular/most requested ones. I try my best to read them if it catches my attention. Like, if it’s a favorite trope of mine, then I’ll read it. I really wanna start reading more though (like a couple of the more “popular” ones that get requested on the blog a lot, I wanna try reading those ones).
Do you check for badly written fics? Not really, unless it’s something that I’m personally reading and not a fic that I’m looking for on the catalogue/library. I try to add most fics onto the library. Usually I don’t even scroll down to look on the fic. As long as I know it’s phan, then I’ll add it to the library.
Have you made masterlists? How long that can take? I think it’s safe to say that I have made plenty of masterlists! Haha. I couldn’t even tell you how many at this point. I love creating masterlists. Honestly, it’s one of my favorite parts of the blog (besides adding fics to the library). I’ve literally spent hours creating masterlists (especially if it’s a hard genre to find fics for) but if I’m really motivated to make a masterlist, then it can just take a little bit of time.
Do you read the fics you recommend? For the most part, yes, especially if we’re talking about the Mey’s Monthly Memorables. Like I said before, I don’t really read a lot of fics so I’m happy when I do read a fic and really like it and get to recommend it to other people!
Any notes to add? Well, I just want to say how happy I am that I get to be apart of this catalogue/blog in general. Reading and writing phanfics is something that I truly enjoy doing, and I think it’s super cool that we have created this little community for something we all enjoy and don’t get judged for it. It’s such a pleasure getting to work with the other admins, even if I’m not super active on the chats haha, but I can’t wait to see the blog grow even more! I know there’s a lot of exciting things to look forward to in the future :)
How do you find phanfics? keyword search is my best friend. the more distinct and unique you can make your search, the easier it will be (here’s my plug for you guys to make your asks as specific as possible! :p) also, a healthy dose of magic helps...sometimes you really do just get lucky.
Do you read all the phanfics? definitely not! ctrl+f is a miracle tool that helps me check that i’m at the right work when i haven’t read it. with that said, the more you read, the higher chance that you look at an ask and know exactly what it is.
Do you check for badly written fics? like some of the other admins have said, i don’t really believe in “badly written fics.” of course i have my preferences when i’m reading for enjoyment or doing personal recs, but in terms of finding stuff for the blog, i would never discriminate like that.
Have you made masterlists? How long that can take? my first masterlist for pfc will be Cheating (2), coming soon to a dash near you! it probably took 2-3 hours, and i did it mostly by keyword search, since i actually don’t read a lot of heavy angst fics :x
Do you read the fics you recommend? definitely. most of my recs are probably ones i’ve read multiple times actually, since i tend towards < 5k oneshots.
Any notes to add? i feel like i can’t put into words how much i love working on the blog. between being able to contribute positively to the dnp community and being so warmly welcomed into the little admin family, it has truly been my favorite fandom experience. we are working on lots of new projects that we’re excited to share with you guys, so stay tuned! ♥
Any notes to add? I don’t know why they hired me. Why am I here. I know nothing. All I do is mess up stuff in the library and badly answer asks. Rachel only keeps me around for lessons in Norwegian and cat pictures. If they wanted me as a tour guide they should have just said so.
How do you find phanfics? I keyword search. On every website. Fortunately for me I’ve read a LOT of phanfic (or unfortunately, it’s quite a sad thing). If I’ve read it, it’s probably on ao3, and if it’s on ao3 then it’s easy to find because ao3 has its shit together.
Do you read all the phanfics? It depends on my mood. If it interests me and it’s short I’ll read it, otherwise I’ll set it aside for later. Also, I can’t stomach unhappy endings. If a fic’s got major character death catch me closing that tab.
Do you check for badly written fics? Right, so, I’d say I have high standards for the fics I read. But for this blog it literally doesn’t matter because we should encourage writers regardless of quality because we gotta stick together and build each other up because practice and support is how we improve. Someone’s always gonna be out there enjoying someone else’s work.
Have you made masterlists? How long that can take? Since I’m new and all and don’t have much confidence in doing stuff, I haven’t made one properly yet. I’ll make one now. Update: I made one. I’d say it took me two hours.
Do you read the fics you recommend? For sure.
Any notes to add? I’m thankful for the opportunity to be an admin on this blog. I’m enjoying getting involved with the community that I’ve only really watched from the sidelines for some time. Everyone is wonderful and funny and supportive, and the projects we have in store are promising ;)
How do you find phanfics? First, I usually keyword search here on the blog, then phanfic, then Ao3, and then on google. Ao3 and google are lifesavers for finding fics that don’t exist on our blog. In the rare case that I still haven’t found it after keyword searching, I might scour through some tags here on the blog or on tumblr.
Do you read all the phanfics? Definitely not. I don’t think I’d ever get anything done if I read every phanfic that I find. Ctrl+F is amazing for checking that I’ve found the right fic. If I do come across a fic really interests me, I’ll bookmark it to read at a later date.
Do you check for badly written fics? Nope. If I’m reading phanfics in my own time I might choose to not read a poorly written fic but this blog is about representing the work of all authors!
Have you made masterlists? How long that can take? I’ve made several masterlists! I recently did the Space/Aliens (2) masterlist and I have two more masterlists coming out very soon. They usually take anywhere from 2-5 hours for me to complete. Although, some masterlists I work on-and-off on for several days or weeks before they’re fully completed.
Do you read the fics you recommend? Of course!!!
Any notes to add? I’m so happy that I get to work on this blog with all of these wonderful, amazing, and brilliant people. I wouldn’t give it up for anything in the world. I’m so lucky that all of the admins put up with my constant cheesecake metaphors and sex jokes and that all of you in the phandom deal with my weird masterlists and badly answered asks <3
