PFS Rapid Review - #TBT Edition - The Sacrament

The Sacrament is Ti West’s best film yet. We follow three VICE correspondents into a utopian community called Eden Parish; they want to investigate for the show and meet the one they call “Father”. Ti West revels in the slow burn suspense, and the way he ratchets up the tension is masterful. The end game is reminiscent of a real moment in history, but as seen here it carries a weight and an inevitability that will leave you shaken as the credits roll.

Philadelphia Film Festival, Day 1 (for me): Vic + Flo Saw a Bear

In Vic + Flo Saw a Bear and his previous feature Curling (screened at the 2011 Philly Film Fest), Canadian director Denis Côté builds quiet, pastoral relationship dramas on a barely-hidden foundation of gruesome violence. Curling was oblique, leaving its blood and bodies unexplained while focusing on the daily lives of a loner and his daughter, but Vic + Flo ties its mellow side and its morbid side more closely together.

The titular couple move into a remote cabin; they are periodically visited by Vic's parole officer Guillaume, and by neighbors friendly and sinister. Flo chafes at the isolation of rural life; Vic worries that her lover may abandon her for the city, for someone younger, or for a man. When the danger lurking in the background finally springs, it feels both shocking and inevitable. Côté gives the audience a traditional suspense plotline with little actual suspense - and a character drama good enough to make that an admirable trick rather than a flaw.

Rating: 4/5 (5/5 on my festival ballot, because it's in contention for the best feature award and I'm a dirty system-gamer.)
