The Marquis de Lafayette was a strong supporter of Washington and Greene, and had even been looked upon in the light of son-like to the two men. Conway had been a friend to the young Lafayette, but the Marquis wrote Conway off soon after he found out his conspiracy against Washington. Congress decided that a late winter campaign against Canada might succeed with the downfall of Burgoyne, and their plans included the naming of Lafayette as the expedition commander, who they felt would easily influence the French Canadians. Although the young Frenchman had proved his worth in battle, Congress still felt that Lafayette would need an experienced officer to help him when necessary. They decided on an officer they felt had too much time on his hands for far less important issues and named Thomas Conway as Lafayette's lieutenant.
Forgotten Patriot: The Life and Times of Major-General Nathanael Greene by Lee Patrick Anderson, pg. 147. Anderson’s version of the Conway Cabal. I still don’t like this book.
