Born to two exocist families, Melody was a bit of an unlucky charm. After all, what type of exorcist couldn't see ghosts? And just how was she supposed to exorcise spirits if just her presence scared them all off? The second problem was eventually solved with a necklace that seemed to neutralize her excessive positive energy and, in turn, made her sensitive to the energies of people and ghosts surrounding her. Though she still couldn't see ghosts, she would know they were there regardless.

"What!" Mogari Shishikuno groaned and slumped against his desk before kicking the legs of his classmates' chair. "Come on, think about it again."
The girl turned around in her seat and made a show of tapping her chin in thought. Mogari's eyes glistened as he waited for her to finally agree, to finally join the--
"Thought about it!" Melody chirped, a sweet smile on her face.
"Yeah?!"
She deadpanned. "Still no." Ignoring another dramatic groan from her classmate, Melody had grabbed her school bag and headed for the door. It would be best not to entertain this guy any longer. Mogari had made the class representative show up on the first day of school soaked to the bone, and she didn't want to be the next victim or whatever shenanigans he had planned. She was going to focus on her studies this school year! Dominate her classes! Get straight A's, go to Tokyo for college, and never have to join the family business of exorcising ghosts. As she repeated this plan in her head, the girl hadn't noticed that Mogari was following after her like a lost puppy. Gross. She let out a long sigh before spinning on her heel and glaring up at the guy, "What is it!"
"Join the Phantom Busters! I know you can see ghosts." He pleaded, clasping his hands together
"I already told you I can't, Shishikuno." Melody rolled her eyes as the half-truth slipped out. "You wanna know why? 'Cuz they don't exist." She stormed over to where her bike was waiting, but before she could even reach for her bike lock, her ever-so persistent classmate had jumped out in front of it. The girl closed her eyes and took the moment to collect her temper before she blew up at this guy in front of all the other students leaving for home.
"Listen! We're having our first official club meeting today. Just stop by and see if you like it. We have another girl, so you won't be the only one!"
Poor girl, her internal dialogue muttered. Melody peeked one eye open to stare at Mogari. "If I go to this one meeting, will you leave me alone?"
"Promise!" Mogari stood straight and held a hand on his heart.
"Even if I don't join?"
Her classmate just grinned down at her cheekily, "You'll join."
And that was how Melody found herself staring down a group of 5 students. Some guy who was avoiding eye contact, another guy who looked like a delinquent, the class representative, a cute gyaru, and... Mogari.
Melody couldn't stop her skepticism from showing on her face as he looked at the group, then to their club room. Which was radiating a bunch of ominous energy, by the way. Not any negative aura, but enough for the girl to know that some old spirit must have been holed up in there. She let out a long sigh. It would weigh on her conscience if she let three teenage boys run around after Mogari in search of ghosts, dangerous or not. The girl looked like she had enough sense, though. She wouldn't have to worry about her.
Rubbing at her temples, she finally turned to Mogari and gave in, "I'll join your club."
