U&U EXCLUSIVE:: Phantom Party- The Beach Cult Sessions Stream + Interview

Phantom Party has teamed up with U&U to release an exclusive stream of their new EP, The Beach Cult Sessions (available January 20th). Stream it by clicking play and check out our interview with the band after the jump!

U&U: Firstly, please introduce yourself to U&U’s readers.

Josh: My name is Joshua Capati and I play guitar and sing in Phantom Party, from Phoenix, Arizona. We are releasing a cassette called The Beach Cult Sessions on cassette on January 20, 2016. Matthew: I’m Matthew Slusser, and I play the bass. Austin: I’m Austin Cooper, and I play the drums.

U&U: We’re streaming The Beach Cult Sessions, a reimagining of your first EP, Stellar. What led you to the decision to rework the songs?

A: A few months after we released the Stellar EP, back in May, and started playing live more, we began to do different things with the songs as opposed to how they were recorded on the first EP.  It’s not like we intentionally sat down and said “Hey, let’s change this song when we play it live,”  it just happened that way. A good example of this is "Skin", where Josh would start off with this dark guitar opening before everything sets in. The first time that happened, it was just him screwing around, but we liked it a lot, so that’s how we start it live now. In the Stellar version, that song starts totally different. When we decided to record with our friends, Matt Aldawood and Oscar Flores, we didn’t want new songs to emerge through a live session or an exclusive cassette, so redoing the five songs we already released was our only option.  At this point, the question posed itself as “Do we want to record the songs in accordance with the first EP or should we just do them the way we would if we were playing a show?”  We thought the latter would make for a better time. J: The plan was to press a cassette and we figured that it would be fun to re-record them. The grittier recordings were influenced by bands such as The White Stripes, Wavves, and the Black Keys. The recordings perfectly reflect what we sound like live.

U&U: Did Phantom Party’s lineup changes influence the decision at all?

J: The lineup changes for sure influenced the decision. 3/4's of Phantom Party's lineup have always been on the same level when it came to decision making. That 3/4's consisted of Matt, Austin, and me. Getting rid of the fourth made the decision making process simpler and smoother. That's my opinion, at least. A: We didn’t want to be a band that had a new guitarist every month. There were occasions where a member couldn’t make it to practice or something so we’d practice as a three piece anyway, so after so many times of that happening, we kind of realized that this three piece is how it should be. M: We figured the Blue Man Group could do it, so why not us?

U&U: Which songs are your favorite?

M: For this release, my favorite song is “Thrash the Gnar” because we've never released it before, and it's a song that goes way back with Josh and I. We were gonna be in a surf punk band a couple years ago, but he bailed on me for some pop punk band with an awful drummer. We could have been huge. J: My personal favorite song is "Stellar" because I dig the melody and I have always had a deep connection with this song, being that "Stellar" was the first song I wrote for the band. A: I remember playing “Stellar” with Josh in our old band before we broke up, so when a couple months passed and I decided to join him and Matt for this band, that song was like a flashback.  However, my favorite song off The Beach Cult Sessions is a tie between “Catholic School” and “Twenty.”

U&U: Which songs do fans seem to like the most?

J: I think the crowd favorite lately has been "Twenty."  This is because I would hear people who are watching us yell "PLAY TWENTY!" at our most recent shows.

U&U: What bands do you draw inspiration from? What bands do you get compared to most often-- and are you flattered by the comparison?

J: As a band, we draw from many influences. My main influences as an artist are The Beach Boys, The Smiths, Weezer, and Beach Fossils. We've  been compared to The Smiths in a couple local press releases. I was very flattered because I am a huge fan of the band, and it makes me feel like we are doing something right. M: We also get compared often to The Beach Boys, Wavves and The Garden.

U&U: Imagine your dream tour. What bands would you take out? What cities (or countries) would you play?

A: I don’t even know.  I feel like it’d be fun to play with Cloud Nothings or Joyce Manor.  I’d also have a blast if we toured with Troubled Minds, since they’re one of my favorite bands right now.  A friend also got me into The Orwells recently so I’d be stoked to tour with them.  I’m trying to think of bands we’d fit well with. I really want to play Seattle and somewhere in Canada. J: My dream tour would consist of touring with bands like SKATERS, Cage The Elephant, or Dinosaur Jr. I would love to travel the world, but lately I've been romanticizing the idea of roaming around in New York City. The city landscapes look so beautiful over there. M: Foxy Shazam, Harley Poe and Rollins Band. We wouldn't fit in; I just want to see those bands live every night. As far as where, I want to go back and play the Midwest where I grew up.

U&U: Speaking of tours, the Beach Cult Tour is coming up. What are you most excited for? Can you give us a taste of what fans can expect?

M: I'm most stoked to just spend night after night on the road. Traveling is a really meditative experience for me and the only thing I love more than the 30-40 minutes I spend on stage are the countless hours I spend on the road. A: I’m stoked to eat at In-N-Out.  We have them in Arizona too, but I’m always stoked for In-N-Out.  I’m also excited to jump into the ice cold beach water and sleep with the seagulls.  Oh, and I’m stoked to play music, but let’s not forget about the In-N-Out. J: I am most excited to see good friends on the coast. We have created good bonds with other bands during our last tour, so I am very stoked to see those bands again. Fans can expect new material and an overall good time. We are always down to hangout with the locals.

U&U: Lastly, what are your thoughts on the new EP? What do you hope listeners take away from it?

J: It is definitely different. It's a new take on our songs. I'm hoping fans can see our grittier side as a band. A: We always wanted to track our music live, and Matt Aldawood did an amazing job as far as mixing and capturing what we sound like as if we were playing it to an audience.  It’s a complete 180 as far as what we usually sound like on recordings.  I hope listeners hear this and say “I want to dismantle the establishment.” M: I am extremely happy with the sessions. They have a kind of gritty rawness to them that I really enjoy. Buy them while you can! Once they're gone, they're gone for good!

KEEP YER EYES PEELED: Phantom Party

Phantom Party is a little poppy, surf/garage rock band with just over 250 likes on their Facebook page. I found them when they followed me on Tumblr. I checked out their recently released EP, Stellar, and was instantly hooked.  Despite hailing from the landlocked Arizona, the band still manages to nail the surf-rock, west-coast vibe. The lo-fi recordings, combined with the lead singer’s style, immediately brought California garage punk twins, The Garden, to mind.  However, I must note that Phantom Party’s music is perhaps a bit more accessible. The songs themselves are very catchy; I found myself humming the lead track, “Catholic School,” to myself a couple days later after my first listen.  The band only seems to be doing local tours right now, but I’d love to see them come to the east coast soon!
