Rain fell lazily in a light mist, the sky black and foreboding; here three teenagers stood close together in a field outside of their city.
Danny coughed, clutching his chest, wheezed out “Th-thank you guys.”
“Of course bro, anything for you man.” Tucker sniffed while tears gathered in his eyes.
Sam huffed in an attempt to keep her face blank and hold back her own tears as she pulled the duffle bag off her shoulder. “Here, it has everything we previously planned for. New identity, paperwork included, cash, clothes, first aid, food, water, you name it. It’ll get you through the beginning when you find a place to land.”
The raven-haired boy let out a wet chuckle, “I’m sorry. I should have-”
“Don’t.” the gothic teen spoke harshly, “Don’t you dare apologize. None of this is your fault Danny, none of it, we’ll take care of Amity; you get out of here.”
Tucker reached into his own bag and grabbed out an old, modified version of a Wayne tech phone and held it out to his friend.
“Take this too, I got together with Technus a while back in case something like this happened, it’s completely encrypted. You can make calls and text; nothing can be traced, we made sure of it.”
A year ago, the techno geek and ghost had a hacking battle for two weeks, in that time they became friends over their love of technology. It never failed to baffle Danny but now he was so grateful to both his rogue and longtime friend.
“Thank you Tuck. Sam, both of you and the others, please stay safe.” He took a deep breath and winced in pain as the stitching along his chest and stomach pulled. “Tell-”
“We got it Danny. Plan Z is already in motion, Huntress is creating a diversion in town as we speak while gathering the any straggling ghosts. We’ll get a hold of Ellie, don’t worry. Now Go!” Sam gave her friend a light push.
Tears streamed down their faces as Danny stepped back, he grabbed the duffle bag and set it on his shoulder trying to be careful of his wounds. He took another step back and then another, then another. Soon he faded from view and took to the sky leaving behind everything he knew. His core wept at the thought of abandoning their haunt and people.
He flew and didn’t stop, not even when the sun rose and fell and rose again; he kept going even as he felt his power wain and the strain of it almost broke him, he continued.
