In conjunction with Preservation Week, we held an open house to showcase the MSU Libraries’ Conservation Lab. This year’s open house focused on custom box making.
Attendees saw a selection of custom boxes made for items in Special Collections. Some of the items on view included a death mask, cuneiform tablet, and a chained binding.
Our staff and student workers showed the process of how a box is made - from measuring to creasing, to attaching the fasteners. Everyone had the chance to try out our board creaser or rivet fastening machine.
We also had a take home craft project - make your own origami box.
It was a super busy and fun afternoon. Thank you to everyone in Conservation who helped out, and thanks to everyone who came down to visit us in the basement!
