Disjunction-junction, whats your function?
what is an argument?
-a chain of reasoning in support of a claim
-set of at least 2 claims/propositions: premise(s) and conclusion
**no argument is true, no argument is false. Arguments are valid and invalid
invalid=fallacious (does not follow)
To determine an invalid argument, find the WTF
W= a possible world where
T= true premise
F=false conclusions
**it is impossible to have true premises while the conclusion is false
EX:
1)we are michingan students
2)we are slow
3)thus, we are michigan students and we are slow
This is a false premise due to the fact that we are not infact Michigan students. However, even though this is a false premise, that doesn’t determine validity of the statement, so this claim would be true.
1)P
2)Q
3)Thus, P and/or Q
Disjunctions:
These are true when atleast one of the “Or” claims to be true.
Example:
1) we are studying logic
2) thus, we are studying logic, or trump is the greatest president in the history of the United states.
The above claim is true due to the fact that although the final conclusion lists uncertain claims, one of the claims is true, which in turn makes the whole claim valid.
More simply put:
1)P
2) thus, P or Q
This is all super interesting on how I can basically have the freedom now to make any crazy claim and know that my claims are valid. I feel like although I have know this information informally for almost my whole life, having it broken down into this type of format makes manipulating information and words a whole lot easier and I honestly feel so free because of it. Its sort of scary when I am in english class or a debates class, and people make claims now that I can counter simply based on the phrasing and its a great feeling to have.
