Nostalgia Trip: My Story of Watching The Slayers - day 11
11. What moment in The Slayers surprised you the most?
I think it was when the little kid at the end of Next killed Gaav and turned out to be Phibrizo (and the final big baddie). Honestly, the whole final arc of Next was such a carefully laden (and foreshadowed) plot twist - it blew my mind. Ever since the Sailune arc what you expected was a final confrontation with Gaav, and then you find out that Gaav has been at war with other mazoku the whole time (which, with all the clues, in retrospect made a lot of sense). And Phibrizzo is just such an amazingly built enemy, smart enough to use both Gaav and Lina as pawns against each other in two plans carried out at the same time, and smart enough to fool everyone with his fakely innocent attitude. And I just like how the whole thing reveals that mazoku are not such a united front after all, which is another surprise in itself (I mean, Gaav aside, at least in the novels it is pretty clear that Xellos is not that fond of Phibrizo - and I wonder if that has to do with Zelas’ feelings towards him).
I wish I could unsee the series/unread the novels, to be surprised all over again.
