- Greeks thought upon virtue (Chinese)

- Modern culture is rule based (Jewish)

- Religion within the Greek time period was used to bind the culture together.

Week 1: Philosophy

Philosophy (love of wisdom)

-defining concepts and beliefs

-not a science

basic concepts: -right, time, knowledge, good, cause, person, justice. (25 centuries ago Socrates found and tested these concepts.)

3 Main Areas

Ethics (how sha'll I live?)

Metaphysics (what kind of world is this?)

Epistemology (what can we know?)

Historically:

Classical/ Ancient (1000 years)

-Ethics

-until the fall of Rome.

Medieval (1000 years after Rome falls.)

- Christianity was the dominate religion.

- Recovering books of the old philosophers. *Reconstructing (Aristotle.)

Modern (16-17th Century)

-Reformation of the Chruch

-Rise of Modern Science

-Renaissance

Enlightenment

- real sense of confidence that human beings can do anything.

Post-Modern

-searching for ways to change the flaws of the Enlightenment period.

-loss of confidence.

Philosophers (all taught the other descendingly.)

Socrates (walked around questioning people with awkward questions and once a simple answer was reached he would challenge the definition of the word used.)
