If He Didn't Know Her Better

For @lilliburlero who asked for something from the home life of D.S. Wilkinson

“Philip, what did you say to Mrs. Keating to make her so upset?”, Anne asked, seated at the vanity, very slowly applying cold cream to her face in a voice he would have thought disinterested if he didn’t know her better.

“Oh you know… Cathy is always so sensitive.”

“No darling, that woman has a truly impressive working class resilience…One would not call her sensitive at all”, she replied before turning in her chair to meet his gaze, hold it, and wait for him to elaborate, finishing with, “Go on to bed, you must be exhausted, I’d quite like to finish my book so I expect you will be asleep by the time I join you.”
