Am I doing it right?
I was rewatching Major Crimes and in the episode "Citizens Arrest" Rusty said to Sharon how does he know if she won't lie to him and she responds she won't lie to him, she just needs a reasonable opportunity to assess the facts before she talks to him (She was trying to figure out how to tell Rusty about his father). It just made me think of how Sharon has not told Rusty about Philip Stroh being possibly back in the country. Just a little parallel I noticed.
A few thoughts about the promo
So since Rusty is clearly taking shooting lessons, I think that he would be the person who will end up killing Stroh. If that’s the case, I will be quite upset, because, to me, the only two characters who deserve to kill Stroh are Sharon and Fritz.
Kyra is not likely to do a cameo this season, as she is busy with her new show, so I don’t see how Brenda would even pop up to say hi. And frankly, Brenda had an opportunity to shoot Stroh when he broke into her house, and she chose not to.
Also, I can see how Sharon shooting Stroh could be problematic plot-wise, after what she’s been through when she shot Dwight Darnell and what she told Rusty back in season 2 about shooting a guy who was trying to kill his mother. Having her dealing with these emotions again would be quite repetitive, but it’s not like the show didn’t do Andy’s health issues twice, or Provenza’s retirement thoughts three different times, so I don’t see why where Sharon is concerned they would not repeat two similar plots as well. But then again, this show does an excellent job at lazy writing, especially when it comes to Sharon. We rarely get to see a lot of character development for her, so I don’t even know if, besides the wedding, she’ll have much of a plot. Since the race for the Assistant Chief job is clearly over and she’s already got her promotion, it seems like they might just want to wrap up her storyline before the season (and possibly the show) ends.
And of course, these are all assumptions, sprinkled with big grains of salt, for good measure. Who knows what really happens?
5x19 – “Intersection” Response
I finally found the time out of my busy week to write about the episode. I always say that I’m the kind of fangirl who’s easy to satisfy, so most of the time I like the episodes, even if they are not perfect. This one is no different. I felt that like the previous 2 episodes, we got enough personal stories and case stories.
The Crime
Fritz seems to like his new albeit temporary position. He is certainly feeling comfortable being in charge. I think it may be a sign that he is becoming stronger in the fight for the position. Not that I would mind, of course. I’d rather it be him than Sharon or Davis. Either way, he seems to enjoy bossing the Major Crimes division around. I like Andy’s comeback at him, saying that this didn’t seem like a hit and run, but a murder. I found it kind of condescending of Fritz to answer Andy through his commanding officer. Maybe Pope is rubbing off on him. Maybe he knows something about the race for Asst. Chief that we don’t. Either way, Andy speaking his mind and the way his line of thought is more sophisticated and complex than we’ve seen before does speak to how he and Sharon are more attuned to each other, and I certainly hope to see him in a leading role down the line.
The crime itself irked me. This super smart kid, who seemed to have had the perfect life died a senseless death, only to the murderer, the mother of the boy he ran over several years ago, it made a lot of sense. I don’t know who was stupider – Will who after seeing all the trouble his parents went through to change his and their identities decided to blow his cover by contacting the mother of the kid he ran over, or the mother who for some reason was stupid enough to plan and execute a murder of someone who the court found not guilty, and was only asking for her forgiveness and trying to make something good come out of their shared tragedy. It was like watching a train wreck in action. Personally, I hope she rots in prison. Will may have taken the life of her son, but he did it by accident. She, however, has deliberately taken Will’s life and no amount of grief can justify that. I felt bad for her loss until I realized she was the murderer.
Therefore, I honestly feel like Provenza about the murder.
Provenza’s struggle
I think Will’s case was not really the reason for Provenza considering retirement. It was just an excuse for something he’s probably been thinking of it even earlier. Other fans suggested that unlike the others his life didn’t feel as full, but I have to disagree. I think with Patrice, his life is full, and I don’t think he will be happy to fill in Sharon’s mostly political and bureaucratic position – two things he simply doesn’t have in him. I honestly can’t point at something specific that would make him want to retire. I think he’s simply just frustrated with everything that’s happening around his regarding the fight for the Asst. Chief position. The rest is background noise.
Shandy’s faster than light wedding arrangements
I’m not sure how much passed since they got engaged, but it seems that the wedding arrangements are coming very fast. From “we can’t get married in a church” they were able to get a double annulment in record time, moved on to picking wedding invitations and then sending them in the same week. As a comparison, my brother got engaged 3 months ago and gets married in 3 months, and we are still editing the guest list, and I can assure you that the wedding invitations are yet to be picked. I assume the haste must have something to do with the creators’ belief that season 5 might be their last and therefore they hurried to wrap things up, but to me it creates more questions, especially considering Mary’s podcast where she stated several times that Sharon is in no rush to get married.
Andy’s cake
This deserved a section of its own because we all believed that Andy is a great cook, but I guess he is not such a great baker. We know Sharon can cook and bake because we’ve seen her doing it twice in season 3. I guess when you take sugar, fat, gluten and any joy related to cake out of your cake then you’re left with a pretty shitty cake. But I love how Sharon attempted to make him feel good about it because she was delighted to see him so happy, and the expression on Provenza’s face when Patrice said the cake was wonderful. I felt kinda bad for Andy that his cake wasn’t good, but at least they made it funny.
Stroh’s return
I find it alarming that Stroh has been killing off people who are related to him by the most indirect connections. His 6th-grade teacher, his high school girlfriend and his professor from Ann Arbor – what do they have to do with his crimes? Were they supposed to be testifying about his character in his trial?
If he is seeking revenge on people who he thinks might turn against him at some point, then there is a high probability of him coming after Rusty, Sharon, Emma Rios and even Linda Rothman. And of course, Brenda. Of all these, I would love to see him deal with Sharon and Rusty again. With Brenda, he used the time when Fritz was in DC to break into her house through the window, but Sharon lives on the 11th floor, and now that Andy lives with her, it will be interesting to see if and how he would be able to get her alone. Personally, I’d love to see him fly off the 11th-floor balcony. Maybe it will even have something to do with the last two episodes of the season – maybe he’s responsible for the bombs, or knows the person responsible for them.
And is it just me or does Sharon not telling Rusty about the return of Stroh is reminiscent of the way the Ministry of Magic refused to acknowledge the return of Voldemort? 😊
And last but not least, Sharon trying to give Provenza some hope and also giving him a hug. Adorable moment.
Has anyone else noticed in the elevator, you can still see the stain that was from Philip Stroh's bloody nose from when Brenda pushed him into the elevator on the Closer? Because I've noticed it for a while.
