“The Drowning” Part 5

After escaping custody by Homeland Security, Aquaman and Mera run a gauntlet of military forces determined to take them down at all costs.  But just as they’re about to reach freedom, a new obstacle appears.

To say this is just an all-out action issue is kind of an understatement.  The issue focuses almost exclusively on Aquaman and Mera punching their way through squad after squad of the US military.  I know they’re superheroes, but it all seems a little far-fetched this time.  We do get a few cutaways of Tula in Atlantis and Black Manta dealing with NEMO, but they’re pretty much relegated to single pages.  The intensity is kept pretty high, but it amounts to little more than an exaggerated slugfest.

The art is pretty standard, though there are a few outstanding panels throughout the issue.  Every so often Briones draws a face that just seems a little out of proportion or skewed and it bothers me.  Most of the time he’s fine, if a bit bland.  i’ve got to give props to Joshua Middleton for providing a daunting, but excellent variant cover for the issue!

Certainly the weakest issue of the run so far, but not so terrible as to make you stop reading.  Just feels like some padding to push this story out to six parts.

I’m still not sure how to feel about this series but I’m leaning towards “underwhelmed.” I hate this design for Darkseid and I don’t like Darkseid as a master manipulator, like he’s some kind of Loki knock off.
