Happy 75th, Philippe Petit.
TODAY’S FROZEN MOMENT - 50th Anniversary Today marks the 50th anniversary of this arguably greatest selfie of all time… taken by Philippe Petit as he began his legendary walk over the wire he strung between the two now-gone towers of the World Trade Center - August 7th, 1974… There are a zillions shots from this event, but for me, this is the money shot… Petit walked his wire strung between the two towers of the World Trade Center…8 crossings….45 minutes…3/4” wire….1/4 mile above Manhattan streets…sat down…laid down…spoke to a seagull…danced….and finally gave himself up to waiting NYPD on the South Tower rooftop…who handcuffed him, who roughed him up a little, which was, he said, the most dangerous part of his morning…. When asked at his arrest why he would do such a stunt, he said, “When I see three oranges, I juggle; when I see two towers, I walk”…” An astounding thing he did fifty years ago today… terrifyingly fascinating…. And kinda especially poignant now with the buildings being gone… but then again, it is kinda a wonderful thing that the feat and these jawdropping images - especially this selfie - remain…. eternally…. maybe, among other impressions, a reminder that even amid loss and fleetingness, there is also forever imagery and memory.
