A Mentor of Mine

Philip Perkis has passed; a fine art photographer, he taught at Pratt Institute for many years. He was very influential for generations of photographers coming through that art school in Brooklyn. What I will recall was his relaxed, personal style when speaking with him one-on-one. I'm certain that I (attempt to) emulate him when I meet with my students. I went to see him a decade removed from Pratt and he was as gracious as ever, wrote me a letter as I was applying for graduate school. Phillip Perkis was a real mensch and many people will miss him even though we've not conversed with him for many years.
