Protests in the Philippines start due to the approval of the ATB
Protests had happened at UP Diliman because of the passing of the anti-terror bill in the Philippines. There had been protests earlier held by UP Los Baños earlier in the day, but only time will tell if these would be the only protests against this.

A lot of people are beyond pissed and a common sentiment as to why a lot could not actively rally in the streets because of this is due to the second wave (arguably the first since they never really flattened the curve on that one) of CoVID-19 currently going through the country. Another common reason I saw were the fears that the people have of being tagged as “terrorists” by the government for even just speaking out against the government in physical rallies, but online petitions had been making rounds as well, mostly calling on to international folks for the safety of their Filipino followers.
On a side note, there seems to be politicians that had been backpedaling their connections with the Anti-terror Bill after the backlash they received from the online community and popular opposition. There were two popular politicians that denied their involvement with the creation of the bill - Deputy Speakers Vilma Santos-Recto and Loren Legarda. Luis Manzano, Santos-Recto’s son, had clarified in a tweet that his mother did not co-author the new law but was in favor of it with reservations due to how it could be severely mishandled.
Loren Legarda had clarified in a tweet that she was not a co-author of the law and even voted no on its passing.
Other politicians that had reportedly either denied their support and had been mislabeled as supporters or had initially supported the law but had since voted against it include: Agusan del Norte Rep. Lawrence Fortun and Muntinlupa Rep. Ruffy Baizon.
I could not entirely vouch if these words are sincere as they say, but it’s good to see people in power who had been affiliated with the law publicly expressing their disapproval for it.
It is unclear if the other politicians that had passed the law would turn around and deny their involvement to save face or to genuinely express regret in passing it, or if they will ultimately support the law despite the increasing number of critics.

The protests in the Philippines and blatant police brutality just break my heart and make me nauseous. I’m so tired of a government that continually and blatantly, not only fails to protect their most vulnerable populations, but actively exploits and oppresses them.
These videos make me sick. The pictures of the injured people make me sick. The actions of the police and the elite in the Philippines are horrendous and in blatant disregard for human rights and any kind of compassion. Fuck all of this
