Did you do anything fun over the long holiday weekend? ❄ We celebrated Christmas at home, just me, hubs & the babes. Then yesterday, we took advantage of the gorgeous weather for a driveway social distance gathering with some of our new mommy-daddy friends we met through a local online parenting group. It was SO nice to get out of the house for a bit and intetact with other adults (& their very cute babies). . . We also used some time this weekend to catch up on the latest episodes of HIS DARK MATERIALS, ahead of tonight's @daemonsanddust season finale on HBO. I have really been enjoying the care and thoughtfulness that's gone into this adaptation, and it's making me want to dive in for another reread of my all-time favorite book series. The season finale of HIS DARK MATERIALS 🧭 airs tonight on HBO & I am more excited than ever thanks to this *incredible* piece of mail I received from the folks at @daemonsanddust . . If you’re a regular follower here, then you probably know that the HIS DARK MATERIALS trilogy by @philippullmanofficial is my ALL-TIME favorite series. Ever. These books have changed my life in so many ways, and it’s incredible to think back on how many years these books have been a part of my life. It was actually 25 years ago on Christmas when I received a copy of THE GOLDEN COMPASS as a gift from my dad. I’ve read and re-read both that book, and the rest of the series, countless times over the years, and I always seem to find new meaning in them. . . So you can imagine my excitement (and okay, trepidation) about the HBO/BBC series adaptation. And while the adaptation may not be perfect, it has far exceeded my expectations and wildest hopes. 🚂 BOOK REVIEW! 🚂 It’s been a couple weeks now since I finished reading (devouring) THE SECRET COMMONWEALTH by @philippullmanofficial, the second book in The Book of Dust series, a follow-up to His Dark Materials (aka, my favorite series of all-time). And I’m still trying to wrap my ahead around everything that happened in the book, and the myriad of emotions it stirred up within me. . . THE SECRET COMMONWEALTH is easily my most-anticipated book this year, and it did not disappoint. It was such a delight to be back in Lyra’s world, and what a treat to see her now as a young woman, as an adult, figuring out her place in the world. . . I don’t easily cry over books or movies, but I shed tears quite a few times while reading this book. The things that these characters go through — Lyra, Pan, Malcolm, and others; even the memory of Will — it all stirs up so much! I remember the agony, years ago, of waiting and waiting and waiting for the publication of The Amber Spyglass — and I hope the wait for The Book of Dust #3 isn’t as long, because I’d like to start reading it yesterday. . . I was 11-years-old when my dad bought me a copy of THE GOLDEN COMPASS, and in the 25-years since, I’ve reread that book (and the rest of the series) countless times. These books changed and shaped my life in so many ways, and will forever hold a special place in my heart. So to revisit this world and these characters in The Book of Dust and THE SECRET COMMONWEALTH is truly a remarkable gift. I am once again wonderstruck by Pullman’s storytelling and the magic he weaves with his words. The scope of this story and the events that are unfolding are absolutely incredible, and I will be waiting with bated breath to see how events conclude in the next book. . .
