Does Peter Parker have the powers of a Spider?
Lego Movie 2 A 6/10 Sequel
I was quite disappointed with the sequel to The Lego Movie but I can see where it’s coming from.
The first film was written and co-directed by Chris Miller and Phill Lord and this time only had co-screenplay contribution... and it shows. It has the basic structure of the first film, family drama but a alot lower stakes. Thematically it went from the autonomy of Adult life, childhood neglect and vicious cycles to a 14 year old Lego Nerd and his 11 year old sister that can’t play Lego together.
Visually it was also lacking the depth of animation specifically background, which was layered and benefited from a 3D production, here it was alot more basic. The film would have contributed from a more proficient director, someone a bit more creatively ambitious.
The soundtrack and editing bothered me quite a bit too, the trailer make it look good, with the tight editing and Beastie Boys track, but there was no Beastie Boys and there was a formulaic music production with slight 4th wall breaking songs. The song’s themselves were decent but presentation not great. And the editing basically should have been tighter like the trailers for its style of comedy.
The structure ended up more predictable unlike the first film and kinda felt like a half hearted attempt reeking of a cash grab. They had a story but not enough follow through. Or it could be that Chris and Phill were way more invested in Spiderverse, which to be fair means Lego Movie has to be sacrificed for the greater good XD.
It’s kind of worth watching, but maybe not in the cinema. It definetly won;t get that word of mouth advertising from fans that spiderverse did though.
