It was easier to endure, and so I endured, for everyone, even Sister Maia who pretended it was different, knew what would come—and it did come on that scorching late afternoon when I witnessed my thirteenth summer, sitting in one of the courtyard’s corners facing the entrance to the Great Hall. “Emil,” a deep baritone voice said, and I looked up to see Father Gherman, shadowed by two priests with their veiled faces and dark robes. “Emil, it is time.”
