NEW YORK | Cespedes back on DL as Mets weigh decision on foot surgery
NEW YORK — Yoenis Cespedes is back on the disabled list, and the New York Mets were still trying to determine whether the oft-injured slugger needs surgery on both feet that would require an eight-to-10-month recovery.
An announcement had been expected before Tuesday night’s game against San Diego, but about 35 minutes prior to the first pitch Mets spokesman Harold Kaufman said the team was waiting to receive a second opinion and it was unlikely the news conference would occur until afterward.
Following a 6-3 win over the Padres, however, the Mets still had no update.
“We’re still on the second opinion from the second doctor,” manager Mickey Callaway said. “You have to take everybody’s information and make a judgment call on what they all feel. I don’t think I’ve ever been in a situation where two doctors haven’t been able to get together and come to some type of conclusion in the end.”
Cespedes had an MRI and was examined by a foot specialist Monday in an effort to determine whether he needs surgery to alleviate chronic heel pain.
“One of the best guys in the country,” Callaway said, without stating a name.
The two-time All-Star returned from the disabled list Friday after missing two months with a strained right hip flexor and homered as the designated hitter in a victory at Yankee Stadium. But in a staggering revelation, the 32-year-old Cespedes disclosed after the game that calcification on both heels has bothered him for 15 years and caused the lower-body injuries that have limited him to 119 games in 1½ seasons since he signed a $110 million, four-year contract.
He hasn’t played since.
The left fielder is batting .262 with nine home runs and 29 RBIs in 38 games this season.
“Still trying to gather information,” Callaway said Tuesday afternoon.
New York put Cespedes on the 10-day DL and called up infielders Jeff McNeil and Phillip Evans from Triple-A Las Vegas. Evans was in the starting lineup at third base Tuesday, batting eighth. He went 0 for 3.
Utilityman Ty Kelly was designated for assignment, a day after popping out on a ninth-inning bunt attempt.
The 26-year-old McNeil made his major league debut in the eighth and had a pinch-hit single on the first pitch he saw. He got a big ovation from the crowd of 21,925.
“It felt amazing,” McNeil said. “Threw me a fastball right down the middle and I put a good swing on it.”
McNeil has been a pleasant surprise in the minors this year, earning his first major league call-up. He was hitting .342 with 19 homers, 26 doubles, 71 RBIs and a 1.028 OPS in 88 games at Double-A Binghamton and Las Vegas.
McNeil was a 12th-round pick in the 2013 amateur draft out of Long Beach State. He has primarily played second base in recent years but also has experience at third and could even be used in the outfield, Callaway said.
“Always want to get the first hit out of the way,” McNeil said. “It was unbelievable. Something I’ve always dreamed about.”
In six minor league seasons, McNeil has hit .311 with 28 home runs and an .823 OPS.
“We’re excited that he might be a possibility for us,” Callaway said. “We feel comfortable with him at multiple positions now. That was kind of the goal the last couple of weeks, to kind of hone in on a couple more positions to give us more options.”
It is the fourth stint with the Mets this season for the 25-year-old Evans, who made the opening day roster out of spring training. He had a career-high 14 home runs in 62 games at Las Vegas.

I wanna go back to sleep (Phillip)
Phillip is not a morning person. Written with help from my good friend Maisie who's the queen of fluff. @a-gay-bloodmage Here it is “Everannnn” I whine as the alarm goes off on the dresser, endlessly beeping until manually stopped. With a groan he gets out of bed and turns it off before throwing the covers back “Wake up, Phillip.” I turn onto my back and open my eyes, Ev sits at the end of the bed, a blurry mass of messy blonde hair and striking green eyes. Grabbing my glasses from the side table he comes into focus. “Good morning, my sleepy professor.” He crawls up the bed and kisses me softly, a nice change from usual mornings. Often times I'm up at five or six in the morning while Everan is still asleep, too delved into his subconscious to hear the alarm or notice I've gone, except for the times he won’t let go and I end up late. “No. Bad morning.” I say still half asleep and Ev sits back, looking me over with a confused look then he does something I don’t expect; leaning in again and running a hand underneath my shirt tickling me causing me to squirm before rolling over taking me with him until I end up on top of him. “Whys it a bad morning? It seems pretty good to me, and you don't have to teach until late morning.” Everan runs a hand through my hair as I lay against his chest, his heart rate calm and even as he rambles. “It's too early.” I pout and draw the covers up “And I'm cold.” Ev sighs and shakes his head “You're always cold.” He retorts “It’s good we don’t live in Skyrim.” I shudder at the thought, poor Anna, having to deal with all the cold weather and snow all year, that must be rough. “And if it's too early, why don't you go back to sleep?” Everan asks wrapping his arms around me and placing a kiss on my forehead. “Too late, I'm already awake.” I say breaking away from his grip and sitting up, though the remark is only half true. “I'm going to get dressed. You should too.” Might as well start figuring out what to do for the day, eugh I need tea. Having gotten dressed and had something to eat I check my watch, how did it get so late already?! “Bye Ev i’ll see you later!!” I say grabbing my things and running out the door as I have ten minutes to get across the city. I didn't even bother to put in my contacts, too much effort for such a simple task. What Everan has planned for the rest of the day I've got no idea. Rushing through the campus I get to the enchanting building and find the door already unlocked quickly set my things down and run to the main building, hopefully no ones there yet. I find the classroom mostly empty save for two students who sit at their desks engrossed in their own tasks, one staring intently at his computer and another doodling in some form of notebook. Eventually the head teacher, as I only help out with this class, comes in and begins to set up the curriculum for the day as other students file in. Time passes slowly the dim lighting is not helping the situation. I sit off to the side on one of the counters listening for a while until my mind begins to wander once more. Out of exhaustion or boredom I can not tell the only constant is the subject of said daydreaming. After awhile of daydreaming I impulsively decide to act on the thoughts of said daydream pulling out my computer I go to see what Ev is up to at work, doing such a thing will likely result in consequences from him later, but- that's a risk I'm willing to take. Teasing him is rather fun after all, and Yuuri has pointed out before, I'm a bit of a masochist. There's still an hour and a half left in this class, how has it only been half an hour? “Hi Everan” “Aren't you supposed to be teaching?” “No, this is the class I sit in on. So, what are you doing?” “Trying to work.” “Oh, am I distracting you?” I grin to myself as I already know the answer which of course is “Yes. Per usual, you're distracting me. I'll talk to you later.” After that I get no response instead being having to go about my day. Luckily due to another professor accidentally causing a fire in my classroom I get off work early, of course it's not good that some equipment was ruined though the amount in repairs won’t total to much. As I gather my things to go home I realize how tired I am again which is strange, it's only around 2:00 and I usually start to crash around 4:00 after leaving the building and beginning to walk I become less tired likely due to the fresh air. If only I'd been an English teacher or something not requiring a lab, then I'd hold classes outside much more often. As I walk the idea comes back to annoy Everan again as he did say he’d talk to me later. “Guess who got off work early” “Lucky I still have 45 minutes of paperwork left.” “Well I guess i’ll see you at home then...I’ve got something planned, I've been thinking about it all day.” “You tease, what's it involve?” “I'm not telling but I'll give you a hint, you and me.” “Walk faster I'll be there in half an hour!” I smirk to myself, oh Everan how I love you. Rereading the last text it finally registers and I half walk half run the rest of the way home. Of course I forget my keys! I kick the door once to see if it's open, sadly no such luck. Check under the mat, no spare key. And I have no lockpick a with me, not that I'm particularly good at it anyways. And so having gone through my options I sit outside the apartment door leaning against the wall and trying to stay out of the way of people going up and down the staircase. The stairwell becomes quiet for a while, no footsteps going up or down, no people talking in the lobby or children crying. It had gotten so quiet I began to fall asleep! That is until someone nudges me slightly then grabs me by the collar, opens the door and drags me inside. It's Everan, of course it is. Ev kicks the door closed and shoves me against the wall. “Nice to see you to-” he places a hand over my mouth “Stop talking” Ev whispers and trails kisses along my neck and shoulder before pulling back with a wicked grin on his face. “Hello.” I feel myself blushing and attempting not to laugh. “If any of those leave a mark I will be pissed at you.” His grin only grows wider and he sits, pulling me into his lap “Sure you will.” I pout “It's true!” Everan pats my head softly “I'm just kidding, and it wasn't that hard you'll be fine.” He looks at me with kind, tired, if slightly lust filled eyes. “So what was that thing you had planned?” Ev asks pulling me closer to him and I remember. Getting up I take his hand and lead him over to his room, gently shoving him onto the bed, I turn out the light and crawl in next to him “We’re going to take a nap.” I say pushing him onto his back “That's what I've wanted to do this entire day.” He glanced at me with a look of doubt “Okay maybe it's not the only thing we might do but it's the main thing. I wanna go back to sleep.” With that explanation Everan is satisfied and allows me to curl up against him, the two of us quickly falling asleep as the mid afternoon sun streams through the window.
