when your circle small but all yall crazy
i find the notion of diane listening to each tape cooper sends her like she would do a podcast in her office so funny. imagine someone in the bureau asking her what she's listening to and she has no choice but to respond “oh you know. my boss talking about jelly doughnuts”
speaking of weird misogyny in Twin Peaks fandom I can’t stand when people act like Diane and Laura had no agency in the finale. like come on, first of all it takes two to do ill advised sexual trauma recreation sex magic. this is a metaphor for a maladaptive coping mechanism that they are both engaging in. and it seems to 'work' for Diane.
meanwhile Laura has been mythologized as The Saintly Dead Girl so much people forget that she wanted to live, that she asked Cooper to save her. it's always 'Cooper is a monster for doing this' and not 'what kind of person would Cooper be if he had the opportunity to save Laura and didn’t take it?'
after decades and an eternity of enduring intense trauma he could’ve walked off into his happy ending (however bittersweet) but he didn’t. didn’t you want to save Laura when you watched FWWM? didn’t you wish you could reach through the screen and take her out of the woods?
and Laura takes Cooper's hand again and again because she wants to live! she trusts him! and this is why it’s a tragedy.
also it’s so weird that fans can’t seem to conceive that in this world where time is fractured that the ending of FWWM clearly takes place after the return?? and that seems to be the reason fans get so upset with Cooper, they feel like he’s taking something away from Laura instead of this being the culmination of his journey with her. in that moment they’re both in peace.
something they do not have in the return's finale
something that kills me ever since I rewatched TPTR is that when Diane remembers everything and says what happened to her, she says Mr. C assaulted her 3-4 years after Cooper's disappearance. and I didn't remember that, if a date was given at all, and sorta thought it was maybe more recent, but no. if that's when she split, which is not said outright but is the intended interpretation I think, then she's been a tulpa almost the entire goddamn time. SHE SAYS SHE WAS STILL WORKING AT THE FBI AT THE TIME. how much longer did she work there after? how much she and Albert have kept in touch, if twenty years later he knows what her favourite bar is? how much time has she spent around her old colleagues, being a copy of herself, without none of them having any idea? it just wrecks me, like, conceptually, and is also such a poignant representation of what it can be like to carry trauma that you don't tell people about. when you feel you've been changed forever and nobody knows. "I'm not me. I'm not me." do you hide the signs so well or are they blind to them? god.
