Exhibitions that I saw awhile ago and never posted about, part 1: Phillip Guston and the Poets at the Galleries dell’Academia di Venezia last summer. #PhillipGuston #Woodstock Back in the late 70s I was going to school at Brooklyn Collage and on days off I worked at the McKee Gallery located in the “Barbizon Hotel for Women” on 63rd and Lex. They represented Phillip Guston. Every once in a while David McKee would take me with him to Guston’s studio to look at new painting where I’d be enlisted to help shuffle around these huge paintings. I’d be like “how the hell does this guy move and paint these humongous things by himself? I’d always leave with pink, red and black paint on me somewhere. I became a big fan of his later work. His reviews were bad, people were like, “what the hell is he doing?” I felt the poor guy was tortured by it. He was sweet and gentle I thought but he ferociously attacked this work with such conviction and basically told that world to shove it! So glad to have met him, brave of him I thought. Very inspiring even today! God Bless Phillip Guston!
