“Join, or Die” cartoon in The Pennsylvania Gazette, May 9, 1754.
“Join or Die,” the first cartoon to urge the American colonists to unite for a political cause, appeared in the May 9, 1754, issue of The Pennsylvania Gazette. Benjamin Franklin, the publisher of the Gazette, printed the cartoon to encourage unity against the French and Indians. The image was copied immediately, and many variations appeared later in May 1754.
The snake image reappeared in the 1760s—this time as a symbol of the united efforts to free the colonies from British rule.
Now, in 2018, the snake image has again reappeared: in the new logo for the Philadelphia ‘76ers.
