But I’d be careful of your words if I were you, Miss Caliban.” His voice took on a slightly harder edge, like steel hidden in silk. “Lest you mistake sacrifice for selfishness.”

Clearly, she hadn’t even noticed Olivia was back, but the thought that the woman was back made her smile. Her eyes move from the table and then leaning forward she looks into the living room to see the librarian sitting there on the couch. Now, How could she say no?         “I think, that’s a great idea.”Jacquelyn carefully put everything back into the case and closed it. Getting up from the table she moves the case back to the hallway closet and moves into the living room. Climbing onto the couch, she gives Olivia a smile before leaning down and curling up next to her.      “How long have you been back?”

“You should have seen them, Olivia! M. and Mme. Corvauz ordered room service. The room service was delivered. They took the room service into the room. They ate the room service. They took the cart into the hall and placed it in front of another guest’s door. And then claimed they were being charged for food they’d never order. They’re not even trying, Olivia. I mean for the sake of the nondenominational god, we have all the evidence, and none of it leans in their favor. The phone recording. The security tapes. The order number. The invoice. The copious amounts of DNA left on cutlery, napkins, and toast crusts.”

I think you might expect one of my students to start stopping by with a newfound interest in Jane Austen. Do we happen to have Moby Dick? I’m hoping to start an oceanography lesson course next, and you know how I like to get the class invested with a classic novel first.”

Jacques smiled. Olivia’s excitement was contagious, and filled him with a warm sense of hope.The organization had been flagging since the schism. Seeing a bright-eyed volunteer reminded him that VFD could never be truly lost, so long as there were noble people in the world. “I’m glad to hear it. We’ll need that vim and vigor as we go onward. Now, would you mind if we tested your code breaking progress?” He handed her a slip of paper that looked like a parking ticket. “This was slipped under the taxi’s windshield wiper, although we are-of course- parked perfectly legally. What do you make of it?”
