my non-shipping phm fanfic blew up which i'm very glad of! however the carlgrace i wrote got almost no attention in the same amount of time.

i was upset but i'm lowkey not surprised lol... carlgrace is basically The Least Popular phm ship because people are fucking racist

and the fact it was genderbent probably made it worse because people don't like women. i get genderbends aren't for everyone obviously but i'm still a bit baffled by the parity between the two fics and their reception.

this is my first time writing for a large fandom so i'd always heard all the tales of fandom bigotry and now i'm Witnessing it firsthand. yikes.

PHMovie Grace is so adhd coded I don’t even know how to explain why but just in particular how they show the flashbacks. Like the first one where the world is spinning and coming into focus until we see him staring off into space. And just the specific things we see. It feels exactly like coming back from a long daydream

Is the Eridian language tonal? Like, obviously it has varied melodies and sounds, it’s musical; so musical, in fact, that it’s written in musical notes in the book. But is it tonal in the way that (some) East and Southeast Asian languages are?

Would Eridian’s evolve language that way, or would there be enough unique sounds produced by the Eridian equivalent of vocal cords that layering sounds gets the point across?

Is there a way to say entire sentences at once? Can you theoretically layer words on top of each other or would the layering create new words? Are there root-sounds in the same way there are root words?

I don’t think Eridian has articles the same way English does, evident in the way “Grace Rocky save stars” is translated. To be fair, articles don’t always exist in Earth languages—Russian comes to mind. I think pronoun conjugation is also an issue for Rocky/the translator, but I can’t really tell if that’s because of Eridian’s pronoun conjugation nonsense or because the translator kind of sucks.

I’m also pretty sure Grace canonically struggles with verb conjugation in the book, but maybe that’s just the translator issue again.

Follow up question: does the Eridian language have dialects?

I kind of lean towards no, if only because of Thrums, which are described in chapter 30 of the book as “… sort of a song and discussion in one. But everyone talks at the same time and it’s not really conscious on their part. […] The thrum itself is much smarter than any Eridian in it. In a way, Eridians can become ad-hoc neurons in a group mind.”

Either Eridian’s all have the same dialect (assuming, of course, that they share the same language as a planet) or science/academia has a specific and well known dialect. Not unheard of, given legalese, but certainly not efficient. They seem a lot more collectivist as a culture, so I’m inclined to believe no dialects.

On the other hand, Grace having to learn the differences in regional dialects to teach is infinitely interesting, especially if he only comes across that issue when he thinks he’s fluent.
