fav underrated historical jab at grantaire in les mis is when enjolras, who hugo has already explicitly compared to Saint-Just in his character introduction, challenges grantaire to go to the barriere du maine and speak to their comrades and grantaire is like ‘i’m somewhat of a herbertist myself’ which we then get enj going ‘be fucking fr’

like already a hilarious exchange of course BUT one million times funnier when you remember that hebert was a) executed by the CSP when saint just was still on it b) MORE radical than both saint just and robespierre. also c) known for crude jokes and bad taste political cartoons (in fairness that one I can see grantaire getting behind)…. but can you imagine…. pov you ask me, least principled man this side of the seine, whether Im committed to the cause enough to be tasked with important legwork as we start building barricades .
