Another Jean I did a while ago :)) This was based off of Famke Janssen’s portrayal of Jean, references attached below.
While The Last Stand was definitely not the best portrayal of the Phoenix saga, i think Famke did the absolute most with what she was given, and, of course, she made for a stunning Jean Grey.
Part of why the Dark Phoenix saga is a tragedy is because the x-men chose to fight for Jean, but it didn’t matter because In her nature, Jean chooses sacrifice. After “Jean” kills 5 billion people the X Men fight her in an intense battle and are finally able to subdue the Phoenix, But they along with Jean are immediately summoned by the Shi'ar empire and where she has to answer for her crimes. Due to his time among the Shi'ar empire, Xavier is able to set up a trial by combat. The X Men vs Shi'ar's Imperial Guards. If the X Men win, Jean goes home.
What I like about this issue is the conflict among the X Men. It shows each one in deep thought over what to do. While they all love Jean, they also recognize what she did was horrific and some truly debate among themselves if they should fight for her. But ultimately they all unanimously decide to fight. They know Jean should face some type of justice but they also know she was being influenced by something beyond her control. They ultimately decide she's their family, and they are willing to die and kill to protect her.
But at the end Jean is someone defined by her love and compassion and she couldn't live with what she'd done. The guilt was too much. She knew from the beginning that she wasn't going to leave that trial alive and chose to die for her crimes.
This page perfectly sums it up. If Jean had lived she would have to stay in control for the rest of her inmortal life, and maybe she could do it! But one slip up an everything is done. So Jean prefers this way, because she can not live with the idea of another person dying by her hands, Because nothing mattered more to her than conserving her humanity.
