Hello! Laurence here. If you follow me on my socials, you'll probably have seen me sharing my phone mics. These are vintage rotary phones that I convert into real, working microphones. They work like any other dynamic mic, and they sound like phones, because they are! It's a great way of achieving that narrowband "phone" EQ and lo-fi sound without any additional effects or processing. They make great showpiece props for bands, singers and theatre productions, and we now use them to record all phone dialogue in our audio dramas.
Up to now, I've only been selling them to friends and contacts. But you can now buy them from our Ko-fi shop!
I find the phones by scouring charity shops and marketplace ads, so each one is handmade and unique. They're mostly 40-50 years old, so they have the patina of age on them. Once I've converted a phone, I add a standard 1/4-inch jack input to the back, so it can be plugged into any amp or PA via a guitar lead (TS cable). They're completely passive - they don't need any power to work - just plug in, and away you go.
I sell each one for £100 + P&P, and I will be constantly updating the Ko-fi shop listing with photos of available phones - you can choose from a drop-down menu. At the time of writing, two have been sold, and two more are still available.
If you have any questions, feel free to get in touch! Link to the Ko-fi shop page in the comments below.
