PROJECT ARA AT EXPAND 2014
by Giulio Minotti, Modularmania.com
At this years Engadget Expand 2014 Paul Eremenko, head of Ara team, brought the spiral 1 prototype of Project Ara.
It's a fully working prototype presented running Android KitKat and applications such as Angry Birds.
Paul introduced an interesting Project Ara feature: customizable health sensors. He showcased a pulse oximeter module; measuring oxygen levels in blood using light.
The prototype worked perfectly throughout the presentation, even when modules were hot-swapped; taken out and being put back in or replaced while the device still running.
Project Ara - Phoneblocks a Puzzle or a Lego!?
Since it went viral a year ago, the concept of having a mobile phone easy to upgrade was a bit none realistic, but when Google decided to execute it, many had hope that the phone will see the light.
Well, it will, but with a major flaw, Ara project director Paul Eremenko has recently divulged in a keynote that you'll be able to swap the phone's other modules around, save for the CPU and display, even if you're in the middle of typing out a message or of a phone call.
That's Amazing right ? It depends! If the CPU & display are changeable when turned off, then the phone is up to people's expectations, and Google would have done a good job!If not, then the phone would be a puzzle rather than a lego, it won't be a phone you can buy once and upgrade a lifetime, because while other phones CPU become stronger, apps will become more resource hungry, and unless you can replace CPU, chances are the Phoneblocks will be too weak and need to be replaced and thus won't fullfill it's promise!

Phoneblocks impossible but Motorola will build it!
Google bought Motorola a couple years ago for $12.5 billion, even-though Motorola have a big portfolio of patents, but still so far it haven't proven to be profitable.
So it's not surprising to hear that Motorola took the phoneblock challenge even-though the creators of the original concept said that such a phone is not technically possible, or at least not before 10 years ... But if any company can achieve this concept it's definitely Google ... but it seams Google have hired a company (3D systems) to try to build it, in case they succeed Google will have an exclusivity deal with them, in case not Google might hire another company or tackle this product on it's own!
October 29th.

Phoneblock is a new idea on how a phone should be: you.
You can customize it depend on how you will use it. You can upgrade just the thing you need. And you can also lower technology waste as well as the cost for new phone everytime your phone broke.
Nice idea. I love it
