Photobioreactor For Carbon Capture: How Microalgae Capture CO₂

Hello Tumblr, it’s is 2330 and I am 30 minutes into my work shift and I am going to info dump to you about greenwashing as well as some actual solutions to the energy crisis.

Starting us off, I am solar panels #1 hated. They require way too much maintenance and use way too many minerals that devastate ecosystems in rural communities where they often still rely on the local ecosystems to survive. We can not claim to be ‘green’ if we’re just shoving the pollution onto another part of the world.

My proposed solution is going to sound scary at first, but I urge you to read on. The system I’m proposing is often referred to as a ‘closed loop system’ due to its lack of any real waste. To start off explaining the loop, I’ll start with the waste to energy facilities. These facilities burn solid municipal and industrial waste to produce fly ash and various gasses. Fly ash can be used in creating cement, so that solves that part of the byproduct issue with WTE systems. The second part that have spooked past environmental activists is the fumes associated with the process. Instead of running smoke stacks that allow the gasses to enter the atmosphere, methane can be gathered for vehicles and other electrical facilities. Other gasses, including the methane, can be processed by photobioreactors. Photobioreactors are large tanks of algae, which can also be harvested as aquaculture! Algae can be used to feed livestock, as fertilizer, to create dyes and paper, and to create textiles! I think the main reason this hasn’t been considered as an option within the science community is a lack of risk taking, and the fact that it’s not nearly as profitable starting off.
