Santa Croce in Gerusalemme, Roma, 2019.
Despite its exuberant baroque façade and 12th century campanile, this is one of the oldest churches in Rome. A hundred meters or so from the Cathedral-Basilica San Giovanni in Laterano, Santa Croce, once simply known as Gerusalemme (Jerusalem), was created after Helen, the Mother of Constantine, made a pilgrimage to the Middle East and brought back a fragment of the “true cross.” When she died in the 4th century, her palace was converted to a place of worship, one where the fragment can still be venerated.
