Yesterday was east so here’s a pic from the much more popular-and populated-West Mersea. Home of sailing and famous for oysters, supplying nearby Colchester with seafood for its annual Oyster Feast. My mum used to attend when she was a town councillor but never liked oysters! I’m not nautical so I’ll call these contraptions boat trollies. On scanner duties today. Adding medium format negs to a project that has suddenly taken hold of my imagination and that is loosely titled ‘Essex Coastal Odyssey’. It is a very thinly veiled excuse to revisit the places of my childhood and youth going as far back to memories of my dad taking me on the train on Southend Pier to locations like Dengie which I knew nothing of until work took me there. We had family holidays on Mersea Island which is only nine miles from where I lived but as a 4-year-old it could have been anywhere in the world. Once I was old enough I found I could cycle there in an hour. This is Cudmore Grove on the east side of the island, a popular spot when the sun shines. For personal enjoyment and satisfaction I have decided to shoot all images on film and through my Hasselblad. And whenever possible (weather permitting, I’m no fool) to ride out to the locations on my scooter. The intention is to start on the Essex bank of the Thames at the Dartford Crossing and end in Harwich on the north eastern tip of the county, exit point for travellers heading to the Hook of Holland and beyond. It’s open ended, no deadline, no pressure.
