Landscape Language Phototropism (noun) – growth or movement towards light It seems we’re all chasing the light this time of the year! Plants use phototropism to grow towards sources of light. If you’ve ever had to rotate a houseplant that’s become lopsided next to a window, you’ve seen the results of phototropism. In Mount Rainier’s forests, vine maples grow long and “vine-like” as they stretch out towards patches of sunlight. However, in full sun vine maples look more like typical upright trees. Vine maples may be more twisty in the shady forest understory, but by using phototropism to maximize their exposure to sunlight they are able to adapt and survive where other plants cannot. ___________ NPS Photo. We grew some cress in box with a lid on it, that had one small hole for light. The result: a beautiful example of phototropism, plants growing and moving towards a source of light.

This is a great activity to try at home with the kids.

Next stop was El Chato Reserve to see wild adult Galapagos tortoises. While I have seen and been close to a fair number of zoological specimens, the size of these tortoises was overwhelming. The Reserve also featured two lava tunnels.

It was the end of guayaba (guava) season, and the smell of fermented sugar was everywhere and intense.
