Pearl Crescents (Phyciodes tharos), taken June 29, 2025, in Georgia, US
A pair of pearl crescent butterflies flirting in a patch of bitterweed flowers! The female, sitting on a flower, can be seen signaling to the male perched underneath her who is following close behind in hopes she will accept him as a mate. From what I can find, this wing fluttering from the female combined with her feeding from flowers and not directly acknowledging the male is a sign of rejection, but he is likely pursuing in case she changes her mind! Males and females of this species are most easily distinguished by the color of their antenna clubs, males usually having black antenna tips and females having yellow or orange tips. This was my first time seeing butterfly courting behavior in the wild, and I really hope I get to record more!
