Say Phylactery Lich puts a phylactery counter on Treasure Map, Primal Amulet, or any other double-faced artifact from Ixalan excluding Conquering Galleon. That artifact then transforms into a non-artifact permanent. What happens to the phylactery counter & the Lich?
Your Phylactery Lich is fine, since Treasure Cove (or whatever the back side of the DFC is) still has a phylactery counter on it. (It transformed without leaving the battlefield, and so it retained all of its counters.) Phylactery Lich only cares that a permanent you control has a phylactery counter on it, not what kind of permanent happens to be holding the counter. Phylactery Lich will survive for as long as Treasure Cove stays on the battlefield and keeps its phylactery counters.
Topi’s Daily Card #1362: Phylactery Lich
This is a really neat creature, and with its reprint coming in M19 I figured I’d put in my two cents. The lich itself is really powerful, and with the right deck pretty darn annoying to get rid of. You can’t really target the lich that well due to the indestructibility, but if you’re able to take out the artifact, it might be an easy two for one. If you can blink the lich to get multiple phylactery counters you’ll have a much tougher to deal with creature, or of course have the counter go on an indestructible artifact like Darksteel Ingot or Darksteel Citadel. Because of its stubbornness, Phylactery Lich is great for combat and swinging some equipment or auras around. Just be careful for exile effects, and of course keeping your artifacts untouched as well.
