Is the only downfall for taking PHYS 100 not counting towards the 12 credits of science for promotion? Because I meet the 12 credits with the other courses I'm taking.... is it basically like an elective then, and will it count towards my overall gpa for speciailizations and med school? Thanks!

It will count towards your overall GPA and definitely pull it up if you do well. I’m not sure about med school, you’ll have to look it up because different med schools have different entrance requirements. 

One downfall is that PHYS 100 costs about $500 while Physics 12 doesn’t.

If I were the anon, I would take PHYS 100 to lighten up the course load for the first term (and it's going to be a GPA booster as well). Spend the high school summer for travel instead of taking summer school.

Hi, I took Phys 100 in first term. All the exams were open notes, and the midterms were worth 10% each = 20% in total. If you are not a physics person (like me), or would like to take 4 courses in first semester, I personally would recommend just doing Physics 12 in summer school (or online summer?). The 3 hour weekly lab sessions are not worth it, imo. Beware that class notes is SIGNIFICANTLY more simple than the exams. This course requires one of the most time effort (other than Math or Chem).

PHYS 100 is probably the easiest first-year science course. Midterms are weighed only 15% total, and there is a group exam portion, and you also get memory aid. It is considered to be easier than high school physics 12.

Can PHYS 100 be used for your overall gpa? How come I hear people say this course doesn't count...?

I’m pretty certain any course you take at UBC will be included in your overall GPA (unless you use it for Credit/D/Fail). I think what people mean is that it doesn’t count for the Physical Sciences credit requirement if you're in Science:

If you're still uncertain, I suggest you speak to an advisor at the Science Information Centre.

Hi, I am entering grade 12 in September and I'm wondering whether I should take I should take Physics 12 or should I just take PHYS 100 instead?

If you take Physics 12, you can save money and time. 

If you take PHYS 100, you could potentially get a really good grade that could help your university GPA and some programs simply require something like “6 credits of PHYS”, in which Phys 100 counts. Some students who take Physics 12, have to take Phys 101 and Phys 102 to satisfy those requirements. Other times, Phys 100 doesn’t count. 

Soo…it really depends on the program you want to go into. If you have room, you should just take Physics 12 to get it over with, but if you want a break from Physics, you can just take Phys 100 at UBC.

According to some of my friends, it’s a GPA booster and they claim it’s easier than Physics 12…

Hello, hope you're feeling better!! If a major (CAPS) has a requirement that is "Students must take 3 credits of PHYS in addition to PHYS 101" would PHYS 100 meet that requirement or not since it is a prerequisite to PHYS 101? Also, are there any first year courses that are better to put in the first or second semester? (particularly English or bio since I have to take 2/3 of them)

If there aren't any extra notes about which Physics courses you can take to fulfill that requirement, I'd assume that Phys 100 can't count.

However, assumptions are best when they're verified, so check with the CAPS advisor to make sure!
